The Municipality of Heraklion and FORTH organised a public event on Wednesday April 20, 2016 to promote the RERUM project and the smart city applications that were deployed in the city. The goal of the event was to describe and present to the citizens the purpose of IoT, how they can benefit from the Heraklion smart application and show them the importance of security and privacy in IoT.
The focus of this first event was on the smart transportation application, which is developed by Linköping University and is already deployed in the city, with the assistance of Cyta and the local transportation company. The event was open for all interested citizens and it was extensively disseminated by Heraklion to many local groups.
The event included speeches by the vice mayor Petros Iniotakis (leading the Municipality of Heraklion group working for RERUM), Mr. Costis Mochianakis (Scientist in Charge of Municipality of Heraklion for RERUM), Dr. Athanasios Lioumpas (Cyta) and Dr. Elias Tragos (FORTH – Technical Coordinator of RERUM). Dr. Tragos gave also a demonstration of both the smart transportation application on the mobile phone and the traffic monitoring results on the website. In the end there was a Q&A session, where many people from the audience expressed questions regarding the benefits of RERUM and made suggestions for improvements in the applications.

Dr. Theodore Mouroutis presenting RERUM at the 1st Conference/Exhibition for Smart Cities and Digital Citizens.
Cyta participated in the 1st Conference/Exhibition for Smart Cities and Digital Citizens, which was held in Athens in March 2016. Dr. Theodore Mouroutis as an invited speaker presented the results of the RERUM project and highlighted how they could promote the successful deployment of IoT services in the public sector and how both the citizens and the state can benefit. Furthermore, emphasis was given to the strengthening of competitiveness of municipalities and cities and their openness towards innovation, the exploitation of business development opportunities with cutting edge innovation and environmental protection and transition to a friendly environment.
Antonio Jesús Liñán Colina, CTO of Zolertia and technical leader in the RERUM project for the development of the hardware base of the RERUM RDs, the RE-Mote, was one of the hosts of the workshop “New Frontiers in Internet of Things”, that took place in the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), in Trieste, on March 7-14 of 2016.
Mr. Liñán also conducted some of the workshops within the “1st Summer School on IoT” (photo), co-organized by the ICTP – with whom Zolertia has built a strong collaboration since they are using extensively the RE-Mote platform in their IoT research projects –, the IEEE and the Universidad Javeriana of Bogotá, Colombia, that took place on July 11-17 of 2016, in the Centro Ático of the mentioned university.
In both workshops, within the introductory classes, Antonio Liñán presented the RERUM project, its goals and trials, its requirements and how these require the design of a new IoT hardware platform, the RE-Mote. The RE-Mote was also used during the hands-on part of the workshops to build prototypes of connected devices, using the same sensors as those used in the RERUM trials and which were ported to the RE-Mote platform during the project. The 20 to 30 attendees of the workshops were mostly from the research community, although in the Colombian edition also participated some engineers specialized in IoT and some makers from the local community.

RERUM researchers joined a UK Science & Innovation Network-sponsored visit to Chicago (7-11 March 2016). Dr Theo Tryfonas led the delegation and represented RERUM along with Dr Georgios Papadopoulos. Other members of the delegation were Dr Philippa Bayley, Manager of the Cabot Institute, Ms Rebecca di Corpo, Knowledge Exchange Project Manager with Research & Enterprise Development and post-doctoral researchers Dr Xenofon Fafoutis from the SPHERE project and Dr Aksel Ersoy from the ICIF project (photo).

The delegation was hosted by Argonne Labs, who are developing the Array of Things city sensing platform jointly with the University of Chicago, School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the City of Chicago. AoT is funded by a $3.1M NSF grant to develop open source and open hardware outdoor sensing technologies and deploy 500 devices in the city of Chicago. The prototype sensing nodes incorporate various sensing technologies, including temperature sensors, humidity sensors, light level sensors, infrared light sensors, pressure sensors, vibration sensors, air quality sensors, and particulate matter sensors. During the visit, the delegation also visited:
- Lane Tech High School, who are piloting sensing technology in their school environment. Lane Tech is the largest high school in Chicago and one of the largest in the country with 4,500 students. The school is collaborating with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Array of Things (AoT) project at Argonne Labs on their own pilot project called the ‘Lane of Things’. The idea is for students to build and programme their own wireless sensors to be deployed around the school and to address issues that concern and interest them.
- The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a collaborator of the Array of Things project; and Arup, a British construction firm that specialises in Smart Buildings. The delegation also attended an event on Smart Water infrastructures organised by BuiltWorlds.
- Matter, a Chicago-based incubator dedicated to digital healthcare technologies. It was a unique opportunity to discuss the potential challenges and benefits of modern technologies to healthcare systems, and identify potential partnership models between Matter and the University of Bristol.

Cyta participated in the 8th Connected World Conference that took place in Athens in February 2016, presenting the RERUM project, focusing on the benefits it can offer to both public and domestic services (photo). The presentation emphasized the need to build secure and reliable IoT services and how RERUM confronts these challenges. The event attracted many stakeholders from the IoT field, like internet service providers, telecom hardware vendors, software companies and state representatives.
RERUM provided some comments to the early version the ISO standard for the “Internet of Things Reference Architecture“ (ISO/IEC 30141), as noted in an earlier news post. To follow this up, Henrich C. Pöhls from University of Passau on behalf of RERUM went to the “inauguration” and information meeting of the German mirror-committee for the „Internet of Things“ ISO JTC 1/WG 10.
The meeting took place in Berlin on 19. Februar 2016.
It was a very fruitful discussion and RERUM is delighted to see that security and privacy as well as aspects of a better co-operation on network spectrums are well placed on the agenda. Interesting in respect to standardisation was the presentation on the report from ISO JTC 1 SWG 5 that looked at all the existing standardisation activities that are related to IoT: http://www.iso.org/iso/internet_of_things_report-jtc1.pdf . The research of RERUM showcases that it is technically possible to meet the requirements of security, privacy and reliability all together. As ISO’s SWG 5 mindmap highlights, these are important requirments.

RERUM will continue to monitor this standardisation activity, however the timeframe of this becoming a standard is well beyond the end of the project.

The SPHERE interdisciplinary research collaboration SPHERE makes use of some RERUM-developed innovations. Therefore, it made perfect sense to organise a joint demonstration and this took place during the “Would like to Meet: Urban Commons Special” event. It took place on January 27th 2016 at the Knowle

West Media Centre (KWMC), a Bristol-based arts organisation and charity that has been supporting individuals and communities to get the most out of digital technologies and the arts since 1996. The demonstration included RE-Motes featuring the RD adaptor as well as RE-Motes used as wireless sniffers. RE-Motes and the RERUM logo are visible in the background on desks and on the wall in picture right.
Elias Tragos (FORTH) and Vangelis Angelakis (LiU) co-organised a workshop at the prestigious IEEE Globecom conference held in San Diego in December 2015. The workshop was entitled “Networking and Collaboration Issues for the Internet of Everything” and was organised together with the projects TRILLION and SOrBet. The workshop attracted a large number of submissions (24) and after a strict peer-review process only 11 papers were accepted for presentation at the workshop. The workshop was organised in three sessions, complemented by a panel discussion by experts from the organising projects and by a keynote speech. The keynote speaker was Prof. David Elbert (IEEE Fellow, 2015 IEEE CS 2nd Vice President and Treasurer, 2016 IEEE CS 1st Vice President and Vice President of Publications). The workshop attracted a large number of participants, which indeed shows the importance of the topic of security and privacy for the IoT world.

Dr Tryfonas was invited in the above event to discuss the role of smart connected objects, and their security and resilience on the built environment (Photo). RESI is the largest annual industry showcase of the residential housing sector in the UK and features a range of demonstrations, exhibitions and talks that address aspects of housing. Theo represented RERUM and discussed the potential impact of relevant technologies when deployed in the built environment.
